Alaska Fishing Trips

The lodge where I guide during the summer is located 52 miles up the world- famous Alagnak River in the heart of some of the best rainbow trout and salmon fishing in the world. Because of the isolated location you will see more bears than other fishers unlike many other parts of Alaska where the conditions can be very crowded.

The rainbow fishing is a charge as they slam big leech and scuplin patterns (4 to 6 inches long) as well as eating mouse patterns. The mousing is great fun watching a big bow trying to eat the fly off the surface. From early in the season until the salmon have been spawning heavily the big flies work best but once the salmon spawn is in full swing fishing egg patterns become the most effective tactic.

In even years all five species of Pacific salmon enter the Alagnak. The sockeye arrive first with 2 to 3 million going by camp. The Kings and Chums follow. The Kings are brutes and require your heavies fly tackle, a lot of backing and some chasing with the boat. The Chums are great fun and aggressive to the fly. Millions of Pink salmon return in even years. And finally Silver salmon arrive. They are the most aggressive of the salmon attacking flies and putting on a great show.

There are also Doll Varden, Lake Trout, Grayling and Whitefish. The Dollies arrive about the same time as the Silvers and are a lot of fun to catch. The Lake Trout will pound the big flies you will be using for the Bows. Grayling are everywhere taking dry flies and on a 3 or 4 wt. are great fun.

LAST ALASKA REPORT: Well, I arrived back home from Alaska on Monday, August 31st. The last few weeks in Alaska were cool, but still we had very little rain for a place that usually rains every day. So the Alagnak was getting very low. The rainbow fishing this year was spotty with some days being very good with nice big fish and others catching a hundred 6 inch rainbows. We have a few real good age classes coming up. The mousing and tarantula fishing remained excellent all summer with many of the bigger fish pouncing on those surface flies with great enthusiasm. Near the end of the season with all the salmon carcasses, flesh flies really produced some outstanding fishing. What the rainbow fishing lacked was more than made up for by an excellent run of dolly varden with many fish in the 18 to 24 inch range as well as several as large as 27 inches. The silver run was average with fish spread out in the system which meant that you would hook several at every spot you stopped at. All in all it was a very good summer of fishing and Alaska provides a once in a lifetime experience.
