Fishing Report - 4/27/08: The
good steelhead fishing continues on the
Betsie. Again, this has been the best
steelhead fishing that we have had in at
least ten years. The fly fishers going out
with me are hooking between a low of 3 to
a high of 15 fish a day with the average
of 7 hookups a day.
With more fresh steelhead coming into
the river, the good fishing likely will
continue for at least another week, if not
longer. The best part is that there have
been very few people on the river. We had
heavy rains on Friday night 4/25. The
Betsie rose a foot and a half overnight.
This past Saturday was my slowest day in 3
weeks. But we still found fish even though
the water was very high and dirty.
Hot flies have been Stink Pickles in
size 4, moose hair wigglers in brown or
blue, crystal eggs in peach with egg and
orange wings and veiled eggs.
The most effective technique has been
to use baby two-handed fly rods nymphing
with floating fly lines and strike
indicators. Chuck and ducking has produced
some steelhead, but has not been as
effective. Swinging big flies has also
produced some nice steelhead and brown
trout.
